Creating change from
the bottom up.
Culturally-affirming therapy for adults (18+) in La Crosse, WI.
The medicine is in the roots.
I often say that "what's hysterical is historical." So much of what we experience in the present, particularly what we struggle with, can be traced to origins in the past. My work is to help you move beyond the treatment of symptoms—to unearth the roots where the seeds of deep, enduring change reside.
Welcome to 3 Rivers!
My name is Tanya Kessen (she/her).
As a proud member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and a resident of La Crosse County, I feel a profound connection to this land. For generations, my people have revered the rivers around La Crosse as a sacred source of life, while understanding the crucial interconnectedness between humanity and nature for the well-being of all living things. This relationship with the natural world mirrors how we should care for our own bodies—recognizing our dependence fosters responsibility and respect.
Living here, I am committed to upholding community values that emphasize connection, sustainability, and inclusivity. The incredible beauty of the coulee region offers a sense of peace and restoration that can truly ‘hold us’ when we are struggling.
As the founder of 3 Rivers Counseling, my mission is to provide a culturally-sensitive and inclusive environment that honors the diversity of our community. I envision a space where you can fully embrace yourself, reconnect with your body's wisdom, and acknowledge the valuable messages within your emotions. My intention is to offer a sanctuary where burdens can be lifted, and you can feel safe enough to explore your inner and outer worlds with genuine curiosity.

Growing up, I was exposed to the multifaceted ways in which individuals, families and communities can struggle—trauma, substance abuse, systemic oppression, healthcare disparities, to name a few. My personal experiences and observations of both suffering and resilience instilled in me a deep sense of compassion and hope for individuals facing immense hardships. It also gave me a strong understanding that recovery is a possibility for everyone.
Reflecting on my own journey, I came to understand that my ability to support others hinged on my own self-understanding and well-being. This realization, coupled with a long-standing fascination with psychology as a framework for understanding human experience, ultimately led me to pursue a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling.
As a fledgling therapist, I worked in a wide range of community mental health settings including as part of a co-response unit designed to change the way those in crisis are cared for, focusing on preventing unnecessary incarcerations and hospitalizations. Later, while working with Child Protective Services, I came to appreciate the extent to which trauma is passed down from generation to generation, as well as how health and resilience are passed down. Today, I am especially committed to supporting individuals struggling with complex trauma as they work to chart a new path forward.

3 Rivers Counseling is proud to provide a healing refuge for those who've yet to find one, who feel unseen and unheard, or who find themselves marginalized by the systems we inhabit today. I work with a diverse range of clients, but here are some themes I am especially at home in:
PTSD and complex trauma.
LGBTQ+ and gender-affirming care.
Anxiety, from social and generalized to phobias.
Childhood / developmental trauma and attachment wounds.
Family dynamics, including intergenerational trauma.
Comfort-seeking behaviors, including substance use.
Intimate partner violence and narcissistic abuse.
Deepening
Connection
To ourselves, to one another, to community, to the natural world. Trauma often results in a loss of connectedness; my work aims to rebuild and fortify our connections to the dynamic realities we inhabit.
Holistic
Growth
I focus on preventing rather than reacting to symptoms, equipping you so you can withstand anything that comes your way. When we lose sight of the roots, it's easy to get lost in the weeds.
A Decolonial
Lens
Although I have training to help guide us forward, you are the expert in your world and experience. We are equals and I take care to hold a nonviolent, non-judgmental space in which we can work together.
A diverse approach that goes beyond talk therapy.
Working with me is highly personalized based on your unique story—no two clients are alike. I incorporate a range of evidence-based tools to help chart a path towards inner calm, confidence and healing that lasts.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy begins by helping clients access and enhance both internal and external coping resources. Following EMDR reprocessing, my clients often describe their past traumatic memories as events that feel further away and no longer hold power over their lives. With EMDR therapy, we don’t just talk about the trauma, we work collaboratively to rewire it with the objective that, in time, it can become a valuable source of resilience and strength.
-
I often utilize a parts-work approach to help clients recognize the nuanced nature of their internal experiences, moving beyond rigid, all-or-nothing thinking. We explore how different aspects of ourselves can emerge, sometimes in intense ways, shaped by our life histories. As we begin to acknowledge and accept these often protective parts, we create space for our authentic selves to step forward and guide our ways of being and responding.
-
I incorporate elements of DBT to help my clients recognize that we can hold multiple truths, even when they are seemingly contradictory. By practicing DBT skills both in-session and outside of the therapy room, my clients are able to enhance awareness of their current experiences without judgment, and learn new skills to manage difficult emotions and foster healthy interpersonal connections.
-
Mindfulness and self-compassion are core principles in my practice. By cultivating mindfulness, we can become more present in our lives, reducing the tendency to dwell on past mistakes or future worries. Intentional self-compassion provides a stable foundation of kindness and understanding towards ourselves, which is not the natural inclination for most people. It encourages us to treat ourselves with the same care and empathy we would extend to a loved one.
-
I utilize Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a form of somatic therapy, to help my clients cultivate a healthier relationship with their bodies, which allows them to use their bodies as a source of wisdom and healing, rather than an adversary. I offer gentle guidance and a welcoming space for my clients to explore their lived experiences, pay attention to their bodies, be with their experiences, and ultimately move towards natural healing.
-
I integrate the most current findings in neuroscience to support my clients dealing with trauma, anxiety, addiction, and other mental health challenges. My approach involves teaching interventions that are linked to lasting changes in the brain to move towards healthy transformation and recovery. I make it a priority to help my clients understand how certain mechanisms of the brain can become cranked up or underactivated in response to stress or trauma, as well as how they can actively influence their brain’s functioning for health.
